Anyone hosting a party this Super Bowl Sunday will likely welcome the news that chicken wings and avocados are dropping in price.

The price of whole chicken wings was listed at $2.65 per pound on Jan. 6 this year. That’s a decrease of almost $1 compared to February last year when the price per pound for chicken wings was $3.38. The decrease in price comes as the supply of chickens reaches the highest level it has been at since the start of 2019, according to Wells Fargo.

This year, Super Bowl viewers in the United States are expected to eat 1.45 billion chicken wings during the Super Bowl LVII weekend. That’s roughly 84 million more wings than viewers ate last year. A few reasons for this uptick are the decreased price of chicken wings and people “getting back to normal” and getting together to watch the game, according to the National Chicken Council.

“While Americans are seeing inflation impact almost every part of their lives, both wholesale and retail wing prices are down double digits from a year ago, according to USDA, and consumers are seeing a lot more features and promotions,” said NCC spokesperson Tom Super.

Chicken wings are not the only hot ticket food item that has gone down over the past year. The prices for avocados and sirloin steak have decreased as well.

The price per pound on sirloin steak in December 2022 was listed as $10.17 — down by almost $1 from a year prior when it was $11.06. Avocados, meanwhile, decreased by 20%. They went from a 4-week average price of $1.50 in February 2022 to $1.20 in January 2023.

However, not all party items will experience a price drop. Soft drinks have gone up from an average price of $1.71 for a 2-liter bottle in December 2021 to $2.13 in December 2022. The price of beer has also gone up by 11%. The price of wine is up by 4%.

The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the San Francisco 49ers Sunday, and their victory was followed by the Kansas City Chiefs defeating the Cincinnati Bengals. The Eagles and Chiefs will face off against each other in Glendale, Arizona on Feb. 12.
