The White House on Thursday gave a short preview of President Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech, saying it will cover his vision for the economy, the legislation passed over the last two years, and his optimism for the country.

Biden will deliver his third State of the Union address on Tuesday, likely giving him his biggest platform and his largest television audience of the entire year.

With less than a week to go, a reporter asked press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre about the speech and what might be in it.

“He sees this as an opportunity not just to address Congress and members of Congress, but also as an opportunity to speak directly to the American people,” Jean-Pierre responded. “He takes this very seriously.”

Biden will give the speech amid a classified documents scandal and with his approval ratings stuck in the low 40s. At the same time, his party overperformed in the midterm elections, and he’s believed to be gearing up for a reelection campaign.

Jean-Pierre said the speech is not finalized and could be revised right up until the moment he gives it.

“You can expect the president to hit on many of the issues that you hear him speak about every day,” she said. “The significant economic progress we’re seeing under his leadership, his economic vision that’s building our economy from the bottom up and the middle out, the historic pieces of legislation passed into law over the last two years.”

An overarching theme, the press secretary added, will be optimism.

“This is something that you have heard from him over and over again, especially in the last two years, how he is optimistic about the future of this country. You’ll hear some of that as well,” she said.
