House Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) is set to file articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, reviving his previous efforts to charge the Biden administration official for his handling of illegal immigration at the southern border.

Biggs will unveil the specific charges included in his impeachment articles during a press conference on Wednesday at 3 p.m., and he will be joined by at least 15 other Republican members of Congress, such as Reps. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) and Andrew Clyde (R-GA). Biggs has long pledged to file the impeachment articles against Mayorkas, following through with an initial impeachment attempt against the DHS secretary in 2021.

MAYORKAS HAS NO PLANS TO RESIGN AFTER REPUBLICANS WORK TO IMPEACH HIM

“I was the first Member of Congress to introduce impeachment articles against DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in 2021,” Biggs wrote in a tweet. “I will reintroduce these articles with even more justification very soon. He has put this country in peril and has not adhered to his oath of office.”

Biggs first introduced articles of impeachment against Mayorkas in August 2021, accusing the DHS secretary of committing a “dereliction of duty in protecting our nation’s borders,” the Arizona lawmaker said in a statement. Those articles failed to make it to the House floor for a vote.

The latest charges come as Rep. Pat Fallon (R-TX) introduced his own impeachment articles on Jan. 10, accusing Mayorkas of committing high crimes and misdemeanors. Those articles have been referred to the House Judiciary Committee for further action. It’s not yet clear whether Biggs will introduce similar accusations in his impeachment filings.

GOP leaders such as House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) have long vowed to open impeachment inquiries into the DHS secretary if he doesn’t step down from office, targeting him for his handling of the southern border.

If House Republicans manage to impeach Mayorkas, it’s unlikely he would be convicted in the Democratic-led Senate. Meanwhile, the DHS said Mayorkas has no plans to resign from his post, noting the accusations being used to file the impeachment inquiry do not meet the constitutional standard of high crimes and misdemeanors.

“Secretary Mayorkas is proud to advance the noble mission of this Department, support its extraordinary workforce, and serve the American people,” a DHS spokesperson told the Washington Examiner last month. “The Department will continue our work to enforce our laws and secure our border, while building a safe, orderly, and humane immigration system. Members of Congress can do better than point the finger at someone else; they should come to the table and work on solutions for our broken system and outdated laws, which they have not updated in over 40 years.”
