Cindy Williams dead: Laverne & Shirley actress dies at 75

Actress Cindy Williams, known for portraying Shirley on beloved sitcom Laverne & Shirley, died on Wednesday.

Williams was 75 years old. She had been struggling with a brief illness, according to a statement from her family’s spokesperson.

“The passing of our kind, hilarious mother, Cindy Williams, has brought us insurmountable sadness that could never truly be expressed,” the statement read. “Knowing and loving her has been our joy and privilege. She was one of a kind, beautiful, generous and possessed a brilliant sense of humor and a glittering spirit that everyone loved.”

Earlier this month, Williams was reportedly scheduled to appear at the World of Wheels auto show in Pittsburgh alongside Henry Winkler, Mackenzie Phillips, Dee Snider of Twisted Sister, and three-time Funny Car champion Robert Hight. The group met with fans and signed autographs. However, it’s unclear if Williams actually attended the event.

Aside from the Happy Days spinoff, Williams is further known for the 1973 film American Graffiti and the 1974 film The Conversation.

Penny Marshall, who played Laverne opposite Williams, died in 2018, also when she was 75 years old. She died due to complications from diabetes.

Marshall’s brother, late filmmaker-producer Garry Marshall, was the creator of Laverne & Shirley.
