Nunn received a significant edge during the midterm elections after the state’s redistricting brought several Republican-leaning counties into the district, dominating the blue Des Moines area.

He appealed to rural Iowans, particularly those in the agriculture industry, by running a campaign to bolster the state’s economy and tackle inflation.

The campaign for the 3rd District was filled with political ads from both sides. Nunn maintained strong support for his stance on abortion and inflation, two areas on which the state leans conservative.

He criticized Axne’s “yes” vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act and the Inflation Reduction Act. She was the only Iowa representative to vote in favor of both pieces of legislation.

Axne’s campaign attempted to swing voters to her cause by releasing a series of TV ads calling Nunn “extreme” for supporting a total ban on abortion. In the past, Nunn voted in the Republican-led state legislature for restrictions such as waiting periods and a ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.
