California congresswoman ‘could not believe’ how violent Monterey Park mass shooting was

Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) said she “could not believe the extent of the violence” of the shooting at a Lunar New Year celebration in Monterey Park, California, over the weekend.
The congresswoman discussed her thoughts on the mass shooting that occurred in her district, which killed 10 people in a dance studio, on CBS Mornings Monday.

“I could not believe the extent of the violence. Ten people dead — this is one of the worst mass shootings in LA County and one of the worst in the nation. And I was also outraged because there are far too many of these mass shootings going on. We have to take actions to make sure that people are safe in America,” Chu said.
Chu previously served on the Monterey Park City Council and as mayor of the city in the 1990s. She pleaded for increased gun control in light of the latest mass shooting.
“I want to say to those who are resistant to these gun safety laws, protect America, protect your fellow neighbors. You don’t know if the next person could be your loved one. And yet we know there are concrete, commonsense steps we can take to stop all this terrible and senseless violence. Why do we have so many guns in this country and even more on the horizon? It’s not right,” Chu said.
Police have said the handgun recovered from the suspected gunman’s van was not legal in the state of California, but it is unknown if that firearm was the one used in the mass shooting.

The suspected gunman, Huu Can Tran, 72, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a white van in Torrance, California, police announced Sunday. The van had been surrounded by a SWAT team, with the area blocked off for hours. The motive for the shooting is currently under investigation.
