Former WWE CEO Vince McMahon settled with a fifth known woman over sexual assault allegations.
The woman was formerly the league’s first female referee, Rita Chatterton. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, she was initially seeking $11.75 million in damages over a rape she alleged happened in 1986 but has since settled for a lesser amount. Sources familiar with the agreement spoke on it to the outlet.
“Mr. McMahon denies and always has denied raping Ms. Chatterton. And he settled the case solely to avoid the cost of litigation,” said Jerry McDevitt, a lawyer for McMahon. McDevitt did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
VINCE MCMAHON ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM WWE
This revelation comes seven months since it was reported that McMahon similarly settled with four other women who were also affiliated with the WWE. Between the four of them, $12 million was dolled out, with one woman reportedly receiving $3 million. These settlements were agreed to between 2006 and 2022.
As a result of the reports last summer that revealed four settlements over sexual assault allegations, WWE launched an investigation into McMahon, during which he agreed to step down from his position until the investigation was finished. Instead, McMahon retired in July.
