Polar bear mauls woman and child to death in remote village

At least two people died Tuesday after a polar bear attacked the remote Alaskan village of Wales on the state’s Seward Peninsula, authorities said.
The attack was reported around 2:30 p.m., and when authorities arrived on the scene, a woman and child were confirmed dead, according to a report.

“Initial reports indicate that a polar bear had entered the community and had chased multiple residents,” Alaska State Troopers said in a statement.
“The bear fatally attacked an adult female and juvenile male.”
A local fatally shot the polar bear during the incident, according to troopers.
Family members of the people killed are being notified, and the identities of the deceased woman and child have not been made public, the report noted.

Approximately 150 people live in Wales, a predominantly Inupiaq town, and polar bear attacks are not common in the area, according to the report.
